You have reached the Hoffman Center for the Arts Submittable home. 

We are a non-profit organization dedicated to the arts, culture, and education based in Manzanita Oregon. Listed below are the projects we sponsor for writers and artists with connections to the north Oregon Coast.

The Hoffman Center Gallery provides artists an opportunity to exhibit their art and engage our community in learning about and enjoying art. We seek well crafted artwork in a diversity of media and intriguing subject matter. The submission period for the 2024 Gallery is July 15-Sept. 3, 2023.

The Wonder Garden Poetry Post is a monthly display of one to two poems in the Wonder Garden's all-weather kiosk. The next submission period is May 1-31, 2024.

Community Writes is an online quarterly publication of the Hoffman Center for the Arts. Writers with a connection to north Oregon coast communities are invited to share writing that focuses on a different topic each season. Contributions are currently being accepted.

The North Coast Squid is a literary magazine showcasing work of writers and artists who live in our community or have a strong connection to the area.  The submission period for the upcoming issue is June 1-30, 2023.

Neahkahnie Mountain Poetry Prize: The first 50 North Coast poets to submit during January will compete for a $100 prize. Submissions for the next competition will open January 1, 2024.

Word & Image pairs 12 writers and 12 artists for a collaborative project that results in an exhibition and a book of linked artwork and writing. Submissions for the next project will be accepted Spring 2024.

  • Artists must submit digital representations of three separate pieces, with the title as the file name for each.
  • Work can be 2-D or photographs of 3-D in any medium.
  • Previously published or sold work may be submitted; however, we do not accept submissions of work that has previously been displayed at the Hoffman Center.
  • Images will print on the broadsides at 300 pixels per inch (ppi) at a rough size of 6 x 8 inches. File size should be at least 1.5MB, and preferably 3 to 5MB. If an appropriate file size is not available, your piece may be disqualified.
  • No name or identification should appear on the images or file names, to insure “blind” review by the jury.
  • The jury will be looking for a wide variety of subject matter, not limited to beach themes.
  • The biographical statement must be under 50 words and clearly indicate the author’s connection to the North Oregon Coast (either as a full-time, part-time, or former resident of Clatsop or Tillamook County, or as a frequent visitor).
  • All participants accepted into the project will be expected to attend the two Word & Image events: June 8, 2024, and October 5, 2024.

  • Poetry: 28 lines max (including stanza breaks and epigraphs), no more than 12-16 words per line, 12-point font.
  • Prose (fiction, memoir, essay): 325 words max. 12-point font, double-spaced. Excerpts from longer works are welcome.
  • Due to design constraints, submissions exceeding length parameters will not be considered for the project.
  • The editorial team takes no responsibility for correcting spelling or grammar, so please proof your work before submission. Too many errors may disqualify a submission.
  • No name or identification on the documents or filenames
  • Previously published work is acceptable.
  • No simultaneous submissions

Guidelines

General Theme: "Seasons in the Garden." Poems should explore place, environment, and/or the relationship between humans and the garden.

Simultaneous submissions and previously published work are allowed.

The submission period will open May 1 and close May 31st, 2024.

Each poem must be no more than 30 lines, including stanza breaks and epigraphs.

Poems must be in 12 pt. font and single-spaced.

Upload 3-5 poems in one Word document with the title of the first poem as the file name.

Begin each poem on a new page.

Do not include your name and contact information in the document or file name. The judges read submissions "blindly" to ensure decisions are based on the work, not the person.

Submissions that do not meet these criteria will not be considered for the project.

"Community Writes" is an online quarterly publication of the Hoffman Center for the Arts. Writers with a connection to north Oregon coast communities are invited to share writing that focuses on a different topic each month.

  • Writing is accepted in the categories of fiction, nonfiction, essay, memoir, and poetry.
  • up to 800 words.
  • The writing must be focused on the prompt designated for each quarter, but the title of the piece does not need to include the prompt topic.
  • The theme for Spring 2024 is “Emerge.”
  • Submissions are currently being accepted.
  • A writer may contribute one piece per month.
  • Contributions will be published as received, on a rolling basis.
  • Each submission should also include a non-copyrighted image to go with the writing (an additional upload in the submission form), if possible.
  • Entries will be lightly edited, with corrections for typos, misspellings, and grammatical errors.
  • Biographical statement must indicate your connection to the North Oregon Coast (as a full-time, part-time, or former resident; or as a frequent visitor). 50 words or less.
  • Document style: 12 pt, double-spaced, 1-inch margins
  • Document file format: .doc, .docx, or .txt. File name should be the title of the submitted piece.
  • If you do not follow the guidelines, thus disqualifying your submission, you may receive a message inviting you to resubmit. If you choose to submit again, it will be subject to the $5 fee.

Other notes: The Hoffman Center reserves the right not to publish material that goes against its mission as a community arts organization. While we discourage anonymous submissions, we recognize there are instances in which writers may feel compromised by identifying themselves. We will consider requests to publish such pieces on an individual basis.
